Cal King Comforter vs King Comforter: Compatibility, Drape, and Mattress Protector Sizing

Comforters often cross-fit Cal King and Standard King. Mattress protectors do not. This page breaks down the compatibility rules by bedding type so you do not buy the wrong size.

Last verified April 2026

Comforters and duvet inserts are usually sized loosely enough that one product covers both King and Cal King mattresses. Mattress protectors, fitted bedskirts, and topper pads are sized tightly to the mattress and do not cross-fit. This means a Cal King household can usually buy "King size" comforters at lower cost than dedicated Cal King products, but must buy Cal-King-specific protectors and toppers.

This page walks through compatibility by accessory type with sizing references and shopping guidance.

Why comforters cross-fit but sheets do not

Comforters are sized to drape, not to fit precisely. A 108 by 96 inch comforter on a Cal King (72 by 84) drapes:

  • 18 inches per side (108 - 72 = 36, split between two sides)
  • 6 inches at the foot (96 - 84 = 12, with 6 reserved for head pillow coverage)

The same comforter on Standard King (76 by 80) drapes:

  • 16 inches per side (108 - 76 = 32, split between two sides)
  • 10 inches at the foot (96 - 80 = 16, with 6 reserved for head pillow coverage)

Both look fine. The Cal King side drape is 2 inches more than Standard King; the Cal King foot drape is 4 inches less. Both are within the "looks intentional" zone. Cross-compatibility works because comforters are sized with intentional overhang.

Sheets are sized to fit corners precisely (fitted sheets) or to tuck (flat sheets). Fit precision means no compatibility tolerance: a 4-inch difference in width or length is enough to fail the corner fit. So sheets do not cross-fit between Cal King and Standard King.

Mattress protector sizing strictness

Mattress protectors use elastic-edged fitted-sheet construction and must match the mattress dimensions to within an inch. Buy explicitly Cal-King-labeled protectors for Cal King mattresses. A 'King size' protector will not corner-fit a Cal King mattress; the elastic skirt is the wrong shape.

Also confirm pocket depth (or skirt depth) against your mattress thickness. Cal King protectors come in 12, 15, and 18 inch pocket depths. A 12-inch protector on a 14-inch hybrid mattress will not seat properly and the elastic will pop off the corners.

Drape preference: how much overhang do you want?

Comforter drape is a personal preference that affects sizing decisions. Three common styles:

  • Hotel-style (long drape): 22 to 28 inches of side drape, 14 to 20 inches of foot drape. Requires oversized king comforters (110 by 102 or larger) on Cal King. Aesthetic preference: covers the bed entirely, hides the bed frame.
  • Standard drape: 14 to 20 inches of side drape, 6 to 12 inches of foot drape. Standard King-sized comforters (108 by 96) work here on either Cal King or Standard King. Most common style.
  • Minimal drape (modern): 8 to 14 inches of side drape, 0 to 6 inches of foot drape. Requires duvet covers sized close to mattress dimensions; specifically Cal-King-sized for Cal King mattress. Aesthetic: shows bed frame, minimalist look.

For hotel-style drape on Cal King, expect to buy oversized king or specifically-Cal-King-labeled premium bedding. Cost premium is 20 to 40 percent over standard King.

Frequently asked questions

Are King and Cal King comforters the same size?
Often, yes. Many manufacturers produce a single 'King' or 'King and California King' comforter sized 108 by 96 inches, which fits both 76 by 80 (Standard King) and 72 by 84 (Cal King) mattresses with appropriate drape. Some brands sell separate Cal-King-specific comforters that are taller and slightly narrower (104 by 100 in or similar) to optimize drape on the longer-narrower mattress.
Will a King comforter look right on a Cal King mattress?
Yes, with caveats. A 108 by 96 inch comforter on a 72 by 84 inch Cal King mattress drapes 18 inches per side and 6 inches at the foot. The shorter foot-drape is the noticeable trade; if you prefer hotel-style coverage to the foot of the bed, look for a Cal-King-specific comforter or an oversized king (110 by 102 or larger).
What size mattress protector for Cal King?
A fitted-style mattress protector for Cal King measures 72 by 84 inches with pocket depths from 12 to 18 inches. A protector labeled 'King' or 'Standard King' will not fit Cal King; the corners are wrong by 4 inches. Buy explicitly labeled California King.
Are oversized king comforters worth the cost?
For taller mattresses (14 in or above) or for buyers who prefer hotel-style drape, yes. Oversized king comforters (110 by 102, 110 by 110, or 122 by 110) provide 24-plus inches of drape per side, covering the mattress fully. Cost premium is typically 20 to 40 percent over standard king sizes.
Do duvet covers differ between Cal King and Standard King?
Yes, more strictly than comforters. Duvet covers should match the insert size. A 108 by 96 insert needs a 108 by 96 cover; mismatch creates bunching. If you use a 'King or Cal King' insert, match it with the same cross-compatible cover. If you use a Cal-King-specific insert, match with a Cal-King-specific cover.
