Dimensions
Is a California King bigger than a regular King?▾
Total surface area is almost identical: California King is 6,048 square inches (72 by 84) and Standard King is 6,080 square inches (76 by 80) under the ISPA mattress size schedule. Cal King is longer but narrower. The shape changes your sleep, not the overall footprint.
What are the exact dimensions in centimetres?▾
California King is 182.88 by 213.36 cm (72 by 84 inches). Standard King is 193.04 by 203.2 cm (76 by 80 inches). These are direct conversions from the ISPA size schedule using 2.54 cm per inch.
What does ISPA stand for and why does it matter?▾
ISPA is the International Sleep Products Association, the trade association for US mattress manufacturers. It publishes a mattress size schedule that most US manufacturers follow. ISPA dimensions are an industry standard, not a regulatory requirement, but they are the closest thing the US has to a universal mattress sizing reference.
What is ASTM F1566-18?▾
ASTM F1566-18 is the US standard test method for innersprings in mattresses. It specifies typical manufacturing tolerances of plus or minus 0.5 inches on width and length. A King mattress measured at 75.5 by 79.5 inches is within tolerance.
Is UK King the same as US King?▾
No. UK King is typically 150 by 200 cm (59.06 by 78.74 inches), closer to a US Queen (60 by 80) than a US King. UK Super King is 180 by 200 cm (70.87 by 78.74 inches), narrower than both US Kings and shorter than Cal King. US sheet sets do not fit UK mattresses.
Who it is for
Who should sleep in a California King?▾
Sleepers 6 feet 2 inches or taller, single sleepers in long-narrow bedrooms, and households where length matters more than shared width. The 84-inch length gives a 6'4" person 8 inches of clearance instead of 4.
Who should sleep in a Standard King?▾
Couples where neither partner is over 6'2", families that co-sleep with children or pets, sleepers who prioritise per-person width over length, and buyers in square or wider-than-deep bedrooms. Standard King is the more common choice for the majority of US households.
Is California King better for couples?▾
Usually no. Standard King gives each adult 38 inches of width versus Cal King's 36 inches. The exception is couples where at least one partner is 6'2" or taller and length matters more than shared width. For couples without a tall partner, Standard King is the better fit.
What if my partner and I are different heights?▾
If the taller partner is 6'2"+, Cal King wins. If both are under 6'2", Standard King wins. If one is 6'2"+ and you both want the firmness flexibility, consider Split Cal King on an adjustable base.
Will a California King work for solo sleepers?▾
Yes, particularly for tall solo sleepers or those who like to sprawl. Cal King is 72 inches wide, plenty for a single sleeper. Solo sleepers under 6'0" who want maximum width might still prefer Standard King for the extra 4 inches; otherwise Cal King is excellent for solo use.
Sheets and bedding
Can you put King sheets on a California King?▾
No. A Standard King fitted sheet is 76 by 80 inches; a California King mattress is 72 by 84. The result is a 4-inch short foot and 4-inch loose sides. Buy sheets explicitly labelled California King for a Cal King mattress.
What size sheets fit a California King?▾
Sheets explicitly labelled California King only. Fitted sheet: 72 by 84 inches with 14 to 18 inch pocket depth typical. Flat sheet: usually 108 by 102 inches. Do NOT use Standard King sheets (76 by 80); the dimensions do not match.
Are Cal King and Standard King duvets the same size?▾
Usually no. Cal King oversized duvets are typically 108 by 98 inches; Standard King oversized duvets are typically 108 by 94 inches. Cal King duvets are 4 inches longer to match the longer mattress.
Do Cal King bed skirts fit Standard King beds?▾
No. Bed skirts match the mattress base footprint. Cal King bed skirts are 72 by 84 in. Standard King bed skirts are 76 by 80 in. The platform of the bed skirt has to match the mattress; otherwise it sags or short-rises at the corners.
What is pocket depth and why does it matter?▾
Pocket depth is how deep the fitted sheet's elastic skirt is. 14 inches is the standard pocket depth and works for mattresses 10 to 14 inches thick. Extra-deep-pocket sheets at 16 to 18 inches accommodate thicker hybrid and pillow-top mattresses. Pocket depth is independent of the base sheet size; you can buy Cal King sheets in extra deep pocket.
Frames and headboards
Will a King bed frame fit a California King mattress?▾
No. A Standard King frame sized to a 76-by-80-inch mattress will leave a 4-inch overhang at the foot if you put a Cal King mattress on it. Cal King requires a Cal King frame sized to 72-by-84.
Will a King headboard fit a California King frame?▾
Functionally yes (it can be attached) but visually no. A Standard King headboard at 80 inches wide on a Cal King frame at 76 inches outer creates a 4-inch overhang (2 inches each side). It usually looks unintentional. Pick a Cal King-width headboard or a freestanding wall-mounted headboard.
What is slat spacing and why does it matter?▾
Slat spacing is the centre-to-centre distance between the wooden slats supporting your mattress. For foam and hybrid mattresses, most manufacturer warranties require slat spacing of 3 inches or less. Wider gaps cause foam to bow through the slats under body weight and void the warranty.
Do King-size beds need a centre support rail?▾
Yes. Any frame at 72-inch+ width requires a longitudinal centre support running head-to-foot. Without it, mattress sag accelerates, slats can bow, and most mattress warranties are voided. Centre support is non-negotiable on any King-class bed.
Split and adjustable bases
What is the difference between Split King and Split Cal King?▾
Split King is two separate Twin XL mattresses (38 by 80 each, total 76 by 80, equivalent to Standard King). Split Cal King is two separate XL Twin mattresses (36 by 84 each, total 72 by 84, equivalent to California King). Twin XL is an ISPA-standard size; XL Twin is a manufacturer-specific split size.
How many fitted sheets do I need for a Split King?▾
Two. Each Twin XL half takes its own Twin XL fitted sheet. Do not try to use a single Standard King fitted sheet across both halves; the sheet buckles where the mattresses separate when articulated.
Will my adjustable base support both split sizes?▾
Most premium adjustable bases support both Split King and Split Cal King. Most budget bases support Split King only. Verify with the manufacturer that the base accepts two 36-by-84 mattresses if you want Split Cal King.
Shipping and moving
Will a King mattress fit up my stairs?▾
Often tight. The IRC residential building code (R311.7.1) sets the minimum stair width at 36 inches. King mattresses are 72 to 76 inches wide. At a 45-degree rotation the effective carry width is approximately 50 inches. Foam mattresses ship compressed in boxes; rigid pocketed-coil innersprings cannot bend and may need a split foundation or alternative route.
Does a Cal King come in a box?▾
Many do, particularly all-foam and many hybrid mattresses. The compressed box is typically 20 to 25 percent of the original volume and fits standard 32-inch interior doors. Pocketed-coil innersprings and premium hybrids generally cannot ship compressed because the steel coils would deform under vacuum.
How much does a King mattress weigh?▾
Varies by construction. All-foam: 90 to 130 lbs. Hybrid: 130 to 180 lbs. Latex hybrid: 180 to 220 lbs. Pocketed-coil innerspring: 140 to 200 lbs. Material type matters more than size; a foam Cal King usually weighs less than a latex Standard King.
What is the minimum interior door width?▾
32 inches per IRC R311.2 for new construction. Older homes often have 30-inch interior doors, below the modern minimum. A compressed mattress box fits any 30-inch+ door; a full-size King mattress on its side typically fits a 32-inch+ door.
Price
Do you pay more for a California King mattress?▾
Usually no, at the same tier. Most major manufacturers price Cal King and Standard King identically. A minority charge a $50 to $200 premium for Cal King in the premium tier. Where Cal King meaningfully costs more is in bedding and accessories: typically 10 to 20 percent higher due to lower production volume.
Why are Cal King sheets more expensive?▾
Cal King accounts for roughly 5 to 8 percent of US mattress sales. Bedding production follows mattress volume. Smaller production runs cost more per unit, fabric waste is slightly higher per Cal King set due to longer cuts, and retailer stocking is thinner so discount cycles are less frequent.
What is the cheapest Cal King setup?▾
Approximately $850 for a functional setup: entry-level compressed-foam mattress (under $600) + basic metal platform frame ($100 to $150) + starter sheet set ($50) + basic comforter ($60) + mattress protector ($35). This is market-available pricing across multiple retailers, not a specific product recommendation.
Upgrading from Queen
How much extra space does a Cal King give over a Queen?▾
12 inches of width and 4 inches of length. For couples that converts to +6 inches per person of personal width and 4 inches more length for everyone. Total per-person area gain: approximately 4.3 square feet.
How much extra space does a Standard King give over a Queen?▾
16 inches of width and zero additional length. For couples that converts to +8 inches per person of personal width. Total per-person area gain: approximately 4.4 square feet. Standard King is the bigger width-per-person upgrade for couples.
Should I upgrade from Queen if I sleep alone?▾
Probably not, unless you are tall (6'2"+) and the 80-inch Queen length is too short. A Queen gives a solo sleeper 60 inches of width, more than most adults use even with full sprawl. Spending the upgrade money on better sheets, a better pillow, or a better mattress at the Queen size usually delivers more sleep-quality improvement than upsizing.
