Will a Standard King Headboard Fit a California King? Sizing, Overhang, and What to Buy

Standard King headboards are typically 80 inches wide, matching the width of a Standard King frame. California King headboards are typically 76 inches wide, matching the Cal King's narrower frame. Swapping them does not work: a Standard King headboard on a Cal King frame creates a 2-inch overhang on each side. A Cal King headboard on a Standard King frame leaves a 2-inch gap on each side. Both look obviously wrong and, in the case of frame-attached headboards, will not bolt on correctly.

Headboard Attachment Systems

Freestanding (wall-only)

Flexible

A freestanding headboard that mounts to the wall only can technically be used behind either bed size if it is wide enough to look centred. A 76-inch Cal King freestanding headboard behind a 76-inch-wide Cal King mattress is an exact match.

Frame-attached (bolt-on)

Must match exactly

Frame-attached headboards use two bolts that align with drilled holes in the frame side rails. These holes are in different positions on Cal King vs Standard King frames. You cannot cross-use them without drilling new holes.

Wall-mounted with kit

Usually flexible

Wall-mounted headboards with a mounting kit are independent of the frame entirely. The headboard width determines whether it looks proportional, but structurally it can work behind either size.

Does "Universal King" Mean Universal?

Not always. Brands like Joss & Main and Wayfair sell headboards labelled "King" that claim to fit both. Check the stated width. If it is 80 inches, it is a Standard King headboard and will overhang a Cal King by 2 inches on each side. If it is 76 inches, it is a Cal King headboard and will leave a 2-inch gap on each side of a Standard King. Width is the deciding measurement, not the label.

Headboard Height in Small Rooms

A Cal King in an 11x12 bedroom already uses most of the wall. A 60-inch-tall headboard can feel visually overwhelming. Consider a 48-inch headboard or a freestanding low-profile design that sits behind the mattress without adding visual height to the wall. This is particularly relevant in pre-war NYC apartments where ceiling heights are often only 9-9.5 feet.
