Room Size for a King Bed

A Cal King is narrower but longer. A standard King is wider but shorter. Both need at least 12x12 feet, but the ideal layout differs.

California King

72" x 84"

6 ft wide x 7 ft long

Minimum room: 12' x 12'

Comfortable room: 12' x 14'

Standard King

76" x 80"

6'4" wide x 6'8" long

Minimum room: 12' x 13'

Comfortable room: 13' x 14'

Spacing Guidelines

24 inches on each side: Minimum walking space between the bed and walls or furniture. Allows you to make the bed and get in/out comfortably.

36 inches in front of dresser: Enough space to open drawers fully and stand in front.

30 inches at the foot: Clear path to walk past the bed without squeezing.

Cal King vs King: Which Fits Better?

Narrow rooms: Cal King. It's 4 inches narrower, which gives you 2 extra inches of walking space on each side. In a 12-foot-wide room, that's the difference between comfortable and cramped.

Short rooms: Standard King. It's 4 inches shorter, which matters if your room is shallow. More space at the foot of the bed for a bench or clear walking path.
